Review: The Walking Dead (TV)

October 27th, 2010

I just finished watching the pre-air episode of The Walking Dead. It’s pretty cool. Not really what I expected after reading the graphic novel, but still it wasn’t that bad. Some of what you read here might be considered spoilers, so if you haven’t watched it yet… Well, I didn’t say anything about the scenes anyway…

The show is pretty edgy, and still keeps the psychological analysis of living with zombies. Which was what really drew me into the graphic novel. Some of the stuff is a bit misplaced, and they added to the story a bit. Kinda acts like a spoiler somehow, but I wont tell you why.

I don’t like some of the characters though. Sure, they’re from the comic, but in the show their personalities are too extreme. In the comic, they were just like normal people. They had strengths, weaknesses, and generally weren’t good nor bad. They were just people lucky enough to survive. A big part of the series for me was when they started to change. Not physically, but emotionally. Here, they might as well be fed to zombies with their attitudes. Not like in the comics where you’d wonder if anybody’d die, and not really hope if someone did. Despite the fact that they’re assholes or what not. Here, you’re almost begging them to die. Meh, way to ruin the characters Frank Darabont.

The zombie effects though are killer. I love how freaky some of them look. I even found a couple of them scary. They don’t look like the average zombies, and that’s what makes them scarier. That they could really be people you know who turned into zombies. And even the ones that are obviously zombies look cool. The effects are great, and really look decomposed. Two thumbs up for the graphics.

All in all, I’d say the series is looking promising. I hope they don’t deviate from the comics too much, else I might end up liking it better.

R.I.P.: Cow-Dog

August 24th, 2010

Today, when I got home, Cow-dog was dead. He’s been sick for the past 3 1/2 days, and wasn’t eating or drinking since he got it. We got a Vet to see him who gave him some injections, but he said his sickness was already bad. Apparently, its some flue he got, common to dogs, but needs to be treated fast.

He was brought to the house a day before my birthday and given to me as a present. That makes him exactly 1 month (31 days) old in our books. But even if he was with us only shortly, we all miss him. No more dog jumping around, bothering the cat, throwing my dirty socks all over the house. Sure they got annoying a lot of the times, but he’s still missed. It’s been a while since we’ve had a dog around the house and it was kinda fun too.

He was a dachshund, almost adult size. He had short brown hair, with patches of dirty white all over. Thus the name Cow-dog. Mom would walk around the neighborhood every morning, and take the dog with her. She commented how all the neighbors likes him. Even the trike drivers would stop to say hi to the dog. Sometimes when I play with him, he’d crawl on my leg and lay down, or he’d lick the back of my neck to ask for attention. I only wish I had taken a picture of him while he was alive. I was going to take a picture of his corpse, but that just seems wrong to post here.

Farewell Cow-dog, we all miss you.

Yet Another Great Day… Night… =)

August 17th, 2010

It’s Tuesday morning 7am, and I’m up writing on my blog. No, I’m not wasting time before going to work, I just came back from work! Yesterday was my first day on night shift, and to be honest, it was actually pretty good. Hmmmm, my last post was about a great day too… I should put more junk in this site :)

I started the day (really early) by trying to stay up. I wanted to sleep through the afternoon so I stayed up until around 3:30 in the morning. I watched 28 Weeks Later and used up an hour or two of my SC2 trial. Ended up getting pwned by more experienced players though. So after that I took my new cat, Princess, to the room and slept. She curled up on my neck before sleeping.

Mom woke me up for lunch, but I asked her to wake me up later. But since I had already woken up, I got up an hour later with a mild head ache. I started the day playing with my new dog, Cow-dog, and prevented him from bullying Princess. After that, I had some lunch (mildly spiced menudo), and started getting ready for work. I took a shower, checked my email, and looked for something on ebay. After that I called the dentist to confirm my Mom’s appointment. She was in so my Mom and our maid Maggie got ready to leave. We left around 3:00, and got to Trinoma where her dentist is at 3:30. I left them there, and proceeded to go to work.

Ok, fine, I didn’t go to work (who goes on night shift at 4pm anyway?). I instead went to Megamall, where I looked for a new pair of jeans. I ended up getting a pair of Dickies Jeans and left it there while they alter the length. After that, I dropped by World Chicken and had my dinner. Pomodoro, Potato Salad, and Grilled Chicked with Monray Cheese. Ever since moving to UBP, it’s my new favorite resto. I left Mega at around 6:30 and walked to my office, arriving there promptly at 7pm. Call time is supposed to be 8pm, but hey, I’m an hour early.

The office was pretty packed of course. At around that time, a lot of the morning and mid-shift people are still there. My friends went out to dinner, but I stayed behind to get to work. I was watching a KT video when people around me started going home, and things started getting quiet.

I finished my video just in time for my team’s meeting with our expat Hiep. He’s from Texas, and a pretty cool guy. The meeting went pretty smoothly, and I learned a lot about the system from my teammates.

After that, I went back to my desk for my snack. I had instant noodles and a Siopao from Ministop, which was actually pretty good. It’s been months since I’ve had one from there, and it’s really improved. The meat and dough were so tender and juicy that it practically melted in your mouth. Plus they put Red Egg in it now, which has always been my favorite part of eating Siopao.

At this time, the night shift started to affect me. It was my first time and I was getting dizzy. Maybe from the noodles, too, so I’m skipping that next time. The next video wasn’t sinking in very good so I decided to go down stairs for some fresh air. Hiep was going down for an early breakfast so I decided to join him. He told me some good news, but I wont tell you just yet.

I was going to take him to Yoohoo. We took a shortcut, and I was forced to use my new traceur skills to take it. Super thanks to Polly for imparting some of her 1337 skills to me. You’re really the best trainer in the PPFA. I was able to do a side vault for the very first time. Guess all I needed was a little encouragement.

He really liked Yoohoo and said he was going to eat there every night from now on. The food in that branch is way better than the one near CG. The Liempo was juicy, not too fatty, and the skin was crispy and tasty. Just the way I like it. We got back around 45 minutes later, and before I continued on my videos, Hiep helped me configure my VPN, and SAP client. Hopefully, starting tomorrow…. Starting later… I can start tinkering around with SAP. I can’t wait for that to happen. It seem interesting, and from what Edgar, our trainer, tells me, I’ll probably be doing dev’t work for it. Good thing I told him my preferences early on. On my way home, I did another side vault, this one much better than the first one (the Liempo did me good).

I did a little OT to finish the video I was watching, and left at around 5:30. I was surprised to see the sun was rising. And I felt really good too. It reminded me of my old college days after doing some overnight work and going home half groggy. But still, I was in great spirits, and did a little free running on my way to the bus stop. Hit my elbow, but the joy overwhelmed the pain. Nothing much, just a little hopping from one place to another, but it was fun.

I got on a bus almost as soon as I got to the stop. The air was still clean ‘coz there weren’t any cars around, and even though the ride took longer than it should have, it was still pleasant. I just relaxed on the bus and listened to some music.

When I got home, Mom was waiting for me, and Princess was running away from Cow-dog again. I checked on the stuff I checked up on ebay, read my mail, and now I’m writing my blog. Maggie just bathed Princess, and now we’re waiting for her to dry up. She’s so skinny now that she’s wet it s hilarious. She looks like small sick dog hahaha! Hmmmmm… It’s strange that I’m not sleepy, but I’d better rest before I lose the chance. So I’m going to leave you now. Hope you enjoyed my long long story. See ya!

A Really Great Day At Work

June 14th, 2010

I had a really great day at work today. It’s June 14th and today is a holiday a holiday (moved from June 12th, Independence Day). I was assigned as holiday skeleton support for this day, and didn’t really mind. Of course my friends were off playing Left 4 Dead 2 before I left for work, but I didn’t mind. This is an entry on why I enjoyed such a day.

Shortly after having some breakfast, I left my house for the office. I took a trike and started the short walk to the bus stop. I was in luck as the bus I normally take was just about to leave as I got there. Normally it would have its fair share of people, but instead it just barely had people standing up, and I was able to take a good seat a few stations afterward. The following MRT ride was equally delightful as it barely got full all the way ‘til the end of my ride.

I got to work, did my usual routine. This day though most of my team wasn’t coming to work so I had to take care of the entire queue. Nothing I couldn’t handle. In total, the entire floor, big enough for around 300 people had a total of 11 people in it. That includes me, 6 more from my team, 3 from another team, and the security guard. I started out assigning incidents to myself (yes it makes sense), reading though the bunch of them took a while, but it got done. My friends asked me out to buy lunch a little early so I joined them. We went to KFC where my friend thought his wallet got stolen. We later found it in his bin back at work, and provided a lot of laughs while we ate.

Midway through work it hit me. I was having a great day! I did not have one single complaint about anything at all! Why? Because it was so quiet! The computers were off, people were quiet, and it was almost serene. Even buying lunch was a relative treat. Almost no people at KFC which is normally jam packed. The workload was more, but since I didn’t have any tasks for the day, and nobody was bugging me, it went down smoothly. I had Sweet Corn and Peanut Bars for merienda, and even bought some Cheese Whiz for the corn. I hardly had to line up to buy it, too. Dare I say that this day at work ended up relaxing me? Yes, I do!

The day went on and I hardly even noticed the time. I was so relaxed and happy that not even the bit of OT I did bothered me. I packed up my things and left with a smile on my face.

On arriving at the MRT station, I was thinking twice if I should take the train or wait for a bus. It was a holiday, so I figured it might be better if I waited for the bus instead. It didn’t take long, maybe 3-5 minutes, to arrive and I ended up with a good seat. But what I noticed about the wait was that it was tolerable as well. Mostly ‘coz there was a reduction in the number of buses. Fewer buses meant nobody had to honk their horn in road-rage, and it was relatively quiet.

The ride home I wrote half of this blog entry, and finished it after dinner. I had Bistek and Potato Omelet, and Iced Tea for drinks. I thought I might as well add the Iced Tea since it was such a good day. The Bistek I hadn’t had in a while and it was a treat to eat it again. As of now, I’m just finishing up this post, and I’ll get to mowing down zombies in Left 4 Dead 2, and sleep soundly. What a great day. Almost makes me with that every work day was a day like this.

Why Reading About Pacifists is Bad For You

June 2nd, 2010

The whole day I’ve been haunted by the events of the previous night. I was thinking to myself why did I let the bastard go? Then it hit me. The past few weekends (excluding the time my mom was in the hospital) I’ve been accompanying her to the dentist to have her teeth strengthened, and to get her some dentures. What I do while the dentist works on her teeth is read the books they have in the lobby.

These books are about the lives of 3 notable people in history. Namely, Mohatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and Desmond Tutu. The books themselves were written by Desmond Tutu. All of these people are famous because they stood up for rights of people, namely the minority. Their actions were pretty much like what happened in Edsa 1, where non-violence lead to something greater. Only a third of each book was about their lives though, the rest was select lines of their written works and speeches.

The words I read in those books made a mark on me that I hadn’t noticed. These people were pacifists and it rubbed off on me too much. I was thinking that if I showed this guy mercy, he would in turn grow some sort of conscience and learn from what he’d done. Now though, I don’t know if I did the right thing.

“The law is the law”, these are words I had heard a radio lawyer say once. I should have had him jailed that time. All the time I knew it was the right thing to do. Only thing I can hope for is that he tries it again, and gets jail time for it. I’ve forgiven him for his crime, that should be enough for him. If he does it again, he deserves a good beating, or some nights in jail with another convict’s dick up his arse.

That’s all I gotta say. No more pacifism for me. Time to get medieval on criminal ass next time. There’s a time and place for action and inaction. Next time, I will have my revenge… yeeeeesss… Ok time to listen to some Metallica to lighten up my mood B-)
